Studi-Tip: Everything about the exam abbreviations
Are you about to register for exams or have you had a look at your exam regulations or macro structure and are overwhelmed by the maze of abbreviations? This post is intended to help you understand the individual terms relating to examinations.
Basically, a distinction must be made between course work (Prüfungsvorleistungen, USL, BSL) and examination work (Modulprüfungen, LBP). Prüfungsvorleistungen and USL are graded as “participated with success” or “participated without success”. All other examinations are graded on a scale from 1 to 5.
You may find the following abbreviations in your study plan: W, P, WP: P stands for compulsory module whereas W stands for elective module. WP stands for compulsory elective module.
You will find the following abbreviations in the examinations:
V stands for Vorleistung. This must be completed before the actual performance and is often a prerequisite for admission to the actual performance.
USL stands for Ungraded course work. These can be repeated as often as you like if you fail. A “USL-V” is understood to be an ungraded preliminary examination.
BSL stands for graded course work. These can be repeated as often as you like if you fail.
All other examination formats fall under the restriction of the maximum number of examination attempts.
LBP stands for Lehrveranstaltungsbegleitende Prüfung (course-related examination). You can only withdraw from this examination within the registration period. This is because you have to complete graded partial performances in these modules during the semester.
PL stands for Prüfungsleistung (examination performance). These can be differentiated between written “PL-S” and oral “PL-M”.
MTP stands for Module Partial Examination. This examination is part of a larger module. The grade is only entered when you have passed all the sub-subjects of the module.
