Update on the SWS fee
On September 20, we demonstrated together with other student representatives in front of the Ministry of Science, Art and Culture and demanded that not we students, but the Ministry pay for the financial problems of the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart. Ms. Bauer came to our demonstration and assured us and the press that the issue was on the agenda, but she did not give any concrete assurances. After the demo, we continued to be in contact with the Studierendenwerk and talked about ways to keep the fee increase as low as possible. Then, on Tuesday, there was a meeting of the Studierendenwerk’s Board of Directors, which again dealt with the planned fee increase. The following was decided: The Studierendenwerk fee will be increased by 12.50€ per semester, the rents in the dormitories will increase by about 25€ for new rentals and the prices for guests and employees will increase, positions in the Studierendenwerk will not be refilled. This is to absorb the costs where they arise and further reduce costs. The increase in the contribution rate that has now been set is therefore half of what was announced in the summer.
We are currently not aware of any concrete commitments or proposals from the Ministry, which is why the majority of the cost increase will unfortunately have to be borne by the students. We are staying tuned!
