What is the Senate?
The Senate is the central body of the University. It is here that the most important decisions of the university are made:
- Establishing, changing and abolishing degree programmes and university institutions
- Deciding fundamental research questions
- Promoting young academics
- Technology transfer
- Electing part-time members of the Rectorate and, together with the University Council, electing full-time members of the Rectorate.
The most important issues for us are the appointment of new professors and the establishment and revision of degree programmes.
The Senate is made up of professors from the individual faculties, academic staff, doctoral students, employees from technology and administration, members of office (e.g. members of the Rectorate, deans and the Equal Opportunities Officer) and us students. We students have 6 representatives there, which is about 20% of the members. In addition, we students are allowed to send a senate observer, who is an advisory senate member (i.e. he/she has no voting rights).
What do the student senate members do?
The student senate members represent the student body to the university in academic matters. So we take care of the core issue of every student representation: studying and teaching.
Our main areas of work are the Senate and its committees, the ASR (Academic Student Council), but also direct cooperation with university institutions such as the Examinations Office, the Language Centre, the Centre for Teaching and Continuing Education (zlw) and the Quality Development Office. Closely connected to all of this is the allocation of quality assurance funds (QSM), which makes it possible to finance projects and initiatives in teaching. This made it possible, for example, to extend the opening hours of the university library.
We also help to shape the individual degree programmes, with a student focus on studyability, choice and freedom. We are also involved in the area of evaluation for teaching and the improvement of key qualifications (SQ).
Furthermore, the student senate members are involved as office bearers in the student parliament. In addition, the student senate members elect the speaker for studies and teaching, who coordinates the work of the senate representation and liaises with the executive board.
