Libraries in Stuttgart

Are you looking for a place to study or do you like to read, but can’t or don’t want to buy every book you would like to read? Here we would like to briefly introduce you to three large libraries in Stuttgart and the possibilities for students to use them.

One library for which you have a library card as a student is the @ubstuttgart. You can search for books in the catalogue at ub.uni-stuttgart.de. The library is also a good place to study, because as a student you have free access to the internet. The UB has two locations; one on the Vaihingen campus and one on the Stadtmitte campus. As of this week, the reading room in the UB Stadtmitte is open again! In addition, the UB offers the option of quickly and easily obtaining a scan of a text.

At the Württembergische Landesbibliothek (WLB) at Charlottenplatz, students receive a free library card. You can apply for it online (wlb-stuttgart.de) and on site. If you apply online, you can simply pick up your card on your first visit to the WLB. On the website you will find more information about which documents you need for the pass. With your ID number, you can then easily pre-order books and collect them from your shelf in the self-service collection area. The WLB also offers many modern workstations, making it a good place to study.

You probably know the third library at least from photos, because the Stuttgart City Library on Mailänder Platz also likes to appear on Instagram. You pay either €4 for a month or €20 for twelve months for a library card, which you need not only to borrow books but also to use the internet with your own devices and to reserve workstations. However, there are also workstations that can be used without a reservation. On stadtbibliothek-stuttgart.de you can also find a list of the different locations of the district libraries, which may be closer to your home than the library at Mailänder Platz.
